Morelos

Morelos constitutes one of the 31 states of Mexico, with an area of about 4,941 square kilometres it is the second smallest state of Mexico.

The Mexican state of Morelos is surrounded by Federal District to the north, Mexico State to the north-east, Guerrero to the south-west and Puebla to the east. Its capital is Cuernavaca, and also has the cities of Cuautla, Jiutipec and Temixco. Morelos received this name due to one of the leaders of the Mexican War Independence, José María Morelos.

In the vast territory, Morelos is in the highest part of the Balsas River, among the Sierra Ajusco and the Popocatépetl Volcano; and continuing to the south, there is also found both Sierras the Tlaltizapan and Yautepec.

Traditionally, Morelos is a Nahuatl-speaking territory, as same as some dialects like Hueyapan, Tetelcingo and Cuentepec. This Mexican state has been always in a revolutionary activity and many guerrillas have established here their homeland, including Emiliano Zapata, when the Zapata’s Mexican Revolution campaign started.

Also, when the Emperor Maximiliano I took in possession the crown of Mexico, the President Benito Juárez had to move to the capital of the Republic to different regions, dividing also the original territory in three army districts being one of them Morelos.

The Mexican state of Morelos has stronger contrasts of vegetation and weather according the altitude is lower; this combination allows the state to enjoy amazing and innumerous landscapes including the grassland of the higher mountains, the eternal snow in the Popocatépetl Volcano, and the low-altitude rainforest in the south. In general, the weater of Morelos is humid and semi-warm.

In the mountainous part of the north, with a semi-cold weather, is able to find forest of oak, pine, oyamel, madroño, tila, trompillo, and chichicaule. But, to the south where dominates the low-altitude rainforest is easier to find forest of casahuate, tepehuaje, huaje, white amate, copal and pochote.

Some of their principal tourism attractions are the National Park of Tepozteco and its pyramid; the ex-convent of Tepoztlán; the archaeological sites of Coatetelco, Las Pilas, Xochicalco, Teopanzolco and the Cortes Ranch; the Cathedral of Cuernavaca, the Borda Garden, the Cortez Palace; and many more.
